Adding texture and pattern to clay

Texture is one of the easiest ways to make handmade pottery your own. Texture rollers press a continuous pattern into slabs, while clay stamps add single motifs, marks and maker's logos.

Stencils work with underglaze or slip to add crisp graphic designs to leather-hard clay or bisque. Texture shows best under glazes that break over raised areas, so test a tile first.

Texture works especially well on slabs. See handbuilding with slabs.

Common questions

When should I add texture to clay?

Roll or stamp texture into soft or freshly rolled clay, before you cut and assemble slab pieces, so the pattern stays even and does not distort.

How do I stop stamps sticking to the clay?

Lightly dust the stamp or roller with cornstarch, or let the clay firm up slightly before pressing.

How do I use pottery stencils?

Place the stencil on leather-hard clay or bisque and dab underglaze or slip through it with a sponge or brush, then lift it straight off.
