Dust the carved face with cornstarch, or press through thin plastic. Wood can soak up moisture, so wipe the stamp dry between uses and brush clay out of the carved lines.

Thick glaze can fill a shallow 0.8 in impression. Wipe underglaze into the carving, or choose a breaking glaze, so the pattern keeps its edge after firing.
