Choosing pottery wheel tools

Wheel throwing needs surprisingly few tools. A cutting wire cuts clay from the block and finished pots off the wheel. Sponges add and remove water while you center and pull, and a sponge on a stick reaches into tall, narrow forms. Calipers and gauges help lids fit and let you repeat the same height and width across a set.

As you throw more, bats let you lift wide or soft pieces off the wheel without distorting them, and a banding wheel or turntable makes decorating and glazing easier. Wheel accessories such as splash pans and trimming aids keep the studio tidy and your pots on center.

Common questions

What tools do I need to start throwing on a pottery wheel?

A cutting wire, a sponge, a needle tool, a wooden rib, a metal scraper and a trimming loop cover almost everything at first. A starter kit includes most of these.

What is a pottery bat used for?

A bat is a removable board that attaches to the wheel head. You throw on the bat and then lift the whole bat off, so wide plates and soft pots are not distorted when you move them.

Why use calipers in pottery?

Calipers measure the opening of a pot and the lid that fits it, so the two match after drying and firing. They also help you repeat sizes across a set of mugs or bowls.
