It supports pieces upside down while you attach handles or feet or carve, and it protects soft rims from flattening.
It is a support cushion rather than a wiping sponge. Use a small finishing sponge for smoothing.
Rinse slip off with clean water, squeeze the pad out, and dry it in open air. At 2 in thick it holds water for a while, so stand it on its edge to dry.
Keep it for unfired clay work. Glaze trapped in the foam can transfer onto the rim of the next pot you set down, which is a problem once it is fired.

A foam pad gives a pot a soft place to rest upside down while you add a foot, a handle or carving, without flattening the rim. It also cushions clay when you press it into a mold, as shown in the photos.
