80 mesh suits most glazes and slips. 100 mesh gives a finer, smoother result for glazes with fine particles or for spraying.

Use a stiff brush or rubber rib in circles on the screen, and add a little water if the batch is very thick.
No. Glaze materials can contain metals that are not food safe, so once the stainless sieve has touched glaze, keep it in the studio and out of the kitchen.
Weigh the dry materials, measure water the same way each time, then pass the batch through the mesh. Note the thickness in a notebook beside the recipe so tests can be repeated.

Sieving is the single best step for smooth, consistent glaze. It breaks up lumps, removes debris and blends the batch. Pour the mixed glaze through the screen and push it through with a rubber rib or brush.
Rinse the mesh straight after use so glaze does not dry in the holes.
