A glaze that looked perfect last month can go on too thin or thick after water evaporates or settles. A hydrometer floats in the glaze and gives a reading you can write down and match next time, so you stop guessing by feel.
- Glass hydrometer with 0 to 70 scale
- 8.5 fl oz graduated cylinder
- Supplier guide: about 30 for dipping glaze, about 40 for spraying
Pour sieved, well-stirred glaze into the cylinder, lower the hydrometer gently, and read the scale where it meets the surface. Rinse the glass straight after use. Handle with care, since the hydrometer is glass.
The photos show a glass stem with a weighted bulb. Let it float freely without touching the cylinder, and compare readings using the same scale and method. The supplier dipping and spraying numbers are starting suggestions; record the reading of a batch that works with your own glaze.
