Underglaze pencils let you draw on pottery the way you draw on paper. Sketch outlines, shading, lettering or a signature straight onto bisqueware, then glaze and fire. The pencil line stays put through firing and shows under a clear glaze.
A pencil line can also be softened with a damp brush to make a wash, and mistakes can be wiped back with a little water before glazing.
- 3 black underglaze pencils with wooden barrels
- Supplier rating: cone 06 to cone 10 (about 1830 to 2340°F)
- Fine point for line work; side of the lead for shading
Test on a tile with your clay and glaze first, since results vary with the clay body and glaze thickness.
Sharpen gently with light pressure and avoid a long, fragile point.
