Questions about this item

Unscrew the barrel, fill it with water, and screw the tip back on. Squeezing the barrel feeds water to the tip, so it stays wet as you paint.

Thinned underglaze can work, but thick color may clog the tip. Most potters fill the barrel with water and pick up color from a palette.

Six nylon tips from fine to broad, one on each pen.

Squeeze water through the nylon tip into a cup until it runs clear, then wipe the tip back into a point. Do this before switching colors, since each of the six pens refills.

With six pens, it helps to give each its own color family. Thinned underglaze stains the barrel and tip, and a leftover tint can show up in a pale wash.

Build color in a few thin layers, letting each dry to the touch. Pen washes are light, so two to three layers usually give stronger color. Your underglaze label has the final word.

About this tool

A water brush pen has a soft plastic barrel you fill with water or thinned color. Squeeze gently and the tip stays wet, so you can paint long washes and blends without dipping back into a water cup.

  • 6 pens, about 7.1 in long, with nylon tips in 6 sizes
  • Fill with water to use with dry or watercolor-style pigments, or fill with thinned liquid color
  • Rinse and refill to change colors

Great for watercolor-style underglaze painting, soft blends and touch-ups. Test thinned underglaze through the tip before filling the barrel.

Fill the reservoir with clean water and squeeze gently to control flow. Use the tips with water-based pigments or blend color already applied to the surface. Rinse the tip and barrel when changing colors. The six pictured nib lengths are about 0.79, 0.71, 0.47, 0.55, 0.47 and 0.39 in; each pen is about 7.1 in long.
