Small (about 2.6 x 1.4 in) suits thin slabs and small boxes. Large (about 4.1 x 2 in) handles thicker slabs and longer edges.
A 45 degree miter on each edge gives a neat corner with more surface to join, so the seam is stronger and less likely to crack.
At soft leather-hard, when the slab holds its shape but still cuts smoothly.
