Yes, clay shrinks as it dries and fires. Set the 7.9 in caliper on the gallery, then check the lid against the same setting, so both parts are measured at the same stage and shrink together.
Take both readings at the same stage, ideally soft leather-hard. Matching moisture keeps the lid and opening in step, so they still fit after firing.
