Five wooden pieces: four ribs (curved-edge, concave rectangular, tapered and teardrop) and one modeling knife with a serrated edge.

About 4.0 to 4.8 inches long and 2.0 to 2.6 inches wide. The modeling knife is about 7.7 inches long. Sizes can vary slightly between batches.

A wooden rib compresses and smooths the clay wall as the wheel turns, removes slurry and helps shape curves. Many potters prefer wood for firm, even pressure on the outside of a pot.

The curved-edge and teardrop ribs follow the inside curve of a bowl. The concave rectangular rib suits straighter cylinder walls, and the tapered rib reaches tighter areas near the foot or rim.

Rinse off clay after use and let the ribs air dry away from heat so the wood does not crack or warp. Avoid leaving them soaking in water.

About this tool

A starter set of classic wooden pottery ribs: a curved-edge rib, a concave rectangular rib, a tapered rib and a teardrop rib, plus a wooden modeling knife with a serrated edge. Each rib has a finger hole for grip.

Use the long edges to compress and smooth wheel-thrown walls, the curved and teardrop shapes for bowl interiors and rounded forms, and the tapered rib for tighter spots near a foot or rim. The knife cuts, scores and shapes handbuilt pieces.
