Not for most pieces. The spinners hold the pot in place. Very tall or narrow forms may still need extra support.

At leather-hard: firm enough to hold its shape upside down but still soft enough to carve cleanly.

Trimming spinners replace clay lugs or tap-centering. Place them around an upside-down pot on the wheel: the rollers turn with the pot and hold it on center, so you can trim the foot without it sliding.
Center the pot first, then set the spinners lightly against it.
